Naturally, sweatshirts and sweaters cost more than plain t-shirts. They are much fancier, warmer, use more material, and use more expensive materials. But every guy (that doesn’t live in a tropical area) needs at least one.
Here are some tips to save money and get the best value when you’re shopping for sweatshirts:
Choose Less-Expensive Brands
For crew neck sweatshirts and hoodies, you can’t beat Russel sweatshirts. Russel is great activewear company and a well-known brand among athletes. Their sweatshirts are durable, inexpensive, and easy to find at department stores – usually $10 or less.
Look For Quality That Will Last
Sometimes spending more initially will save you money in the long run. Such is the case when looking at sweatshirts that will see abuse, whether from sports, working on the farm, hunting, etc. Carhartt is the #1 brand for you in this case.
Similarly, look for brands of sweaters that are actually made well. If they’re made in the USA (or a highly-fashionable country like Italy,) even better.
Spend More on The Classics
Don’t spend lots of money on new, trendy items. Next month, they’ll be out of style and you’ll be out of money!
Only buy the expensive brands when it’s an item you can wear often and will still be in style in 5 years. Plain designs are best. Before purchase, ask yourself, “could this be ‘the navy blue suit’ of sweaters?”
Match What You Already Own
Often times, you’ll be creating outfits that pair your sweaters with your current shirts and accessories. It only makes sense to buy sweaters that match what you already own so you can coordinate everything.
Why buy sweaters that require you to purchase new shirts for underneath them? Or something that would look best if you had a new belt or new shoes to go with it?
(Because if you do buy that new sweater, you know you won’t be able to resist the matching shoes!)
Get a Tie
If you don’t own a tie, get one. Typically, ties are cheaper than sweaters, and some sweaters look good with ties underneath them. This extra look practically doubles the use of a given sweater.
And it’s possible to find a tie that matches multiple sweaters.
Choose Stores Wisely
Consider stores such as Target and Old Navy. For many pieces of clothing, these stores offer good quality, fashionable pieces at low prices. I swear there are sales where sweaters are just $5-9. It’s crazy!
You know those morning show segments where they compare modestly priced outfits ($250) to designer ones ($2500)? The outfits look nearly identical, and often the cheaper one is from Target or Old Navy.
Other stores like TJ Maxx and Marshall’s will stock name brands at super low prices, but you never know what you’ll find.
Some Online Retailers Have Insanely Low Prices
Find an online retailer that deals in closeouts. This would be a great place to buy the basic, “never out of style” kind of items (since you’ll usually be buying them after the season.)
Try Overstock.com, 6pm.com, and even the REI Outlet.
Take those tips and go save some money while expanding your sweater and sweatshirt wardrobe!
